Visual evidence of the earths magnetic field.

When the sun disturbances occur and huge blasts of radiation are thrown out into space, when this energy comes into contact with the Earth's magnetic field, it reacts with this solar wind to form a sort of sheath called the magnetosphere. This acts as a gigantic natural dynamo, more than 150,000 km (90,000 miles) across.

Luminous displays in the earths atmosphere called Aurora Borealis often occur with sunspot cycles and solar activity. Aurora's or "northern lights" occur above the Earth's polar regions when charged particles from the sun interact with gases in the Earth's atmosphere. Excited gas molecules give off visible radiation, or light in the form of "Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights." It is when outbursts of energy or charged particles from the sun collide with the earths atmosphere, that the earths magnetic field is changed, causing birds to have problems with their navigation.

A view from space shows an Aurora Borealis as the solar wind comes into contact with the earths magnetic field. Stronger outbursts from the sun cause electronic havoc with telecommunications and temporarily alter the earths magnetic field....thus causing difficulty for our birds homing instincts.

This photo shows an Aurora in full song. Usually only visible in the far north & south of the earth near the poles region. Caused by the charged particles of the solar wind as they pass by the earth coming into contact with our atmosphere.

Another fine example of nature at work. Due to the huge amount of energy received from the sun. It is when this energy is blasted at us in large outbursts , that our birds navigation is affected.
